The prologue of the novel A Wise Mans Fear follows the pattern discussed on the page A Silence of Three Parts.

Chapter summary

"Dawn was coming. The Waystone Inn lay in silence, and it was a silence of three parts."

The first silence

A vast echoing quiet, made by things that were lacking:

  • The lack of a storm, rain or thunder
  • The lack of travelers
  • The lack of music

The second silence

A small furtive silence which added to the larger echoing one. Caused by Bast moving quietly through the kitchen, tap room and down to the basement. It made an amalgam of sorts, a counterpoint.

The third silence

You might feel it in the inn keepers room, in the dark chest at the foot of the narrow bed and in the hands of the man on the bed.
