The gram is a product of artificery that prevents malfeasance by absorbing the sympathy used. It also helps protect against slippage. [1]

Description[]

It is meant to be worn in contact with the skin. The gram becomes chill to the touch when it protects its bearer, and has a numbing effect similar to a guilder when touched by a person that does not own it, leading Kvothe to conclude that a guilder acts as a gram in addition to being a badge of office. It is expensive to create due to the delicate work and the gold inlay, among other things. Creation of a gram also requires the use of the runes for blood and bone, which are only taught to student artificers at the rank of El'the. [1]

In the Chronicle[]

Kvothe creates a gram after being attacked by Ambrose, who intends to punish or kill the burglar that broke into his rooms at the Golden Pony with the blood he discovered at the scene of the crime. Later, after losing his on the way to Vintas, he constructs another for the Maer Alveron to guard against Caudicusas well as making a hasty attempt to replace his own lost gram. When Ambrose returns to the University (one term later than Kvothe's return) Kvothe immediately constructs another gram for himself.
