  • Just a thought but Kvothe promised Denna he would not uncover Denna's secret patron. He swore it on his name and power, by his good left hand and by the ever moving moon. Maybe somehow this has him bound and why he doesn't play music anymore. Probably unlikely, but a thought.

    • One theory is that, he broke his promise to Denna after he swore on his name, left hand and ever changing moon. Which leads him to becoming 'Kote'. And not only that.. a right-handed Kote as its mentioned in the book. And i dont believe Pat would make such a mistake as to making kote right-handed and kvothe left-handed.

    • “I swear I won’t attempt to uncover your patron,” I said bitterly. “I swear it on my name and my power. I swear it by my good left hand. I swear it by the ever-moving moon.”

Listening to the audiobook again today I heard this and immediately thought the same.

      Name - Changed.

      POwer - Gone?

      Left hand - Music hand?

Ever-moving moon - Can he only go out on a moonless night?

It seems to me that in any fantasy novel, oaths tend to be pretty binding.

When Kvothe swears on his left hand he isnt saying that he is left handed. Your left hand is the fingering hand for right-handed string musicians. I believe in the book he refers to the left hand as being the "clever" one. Around the time he is learning ademre hand gestures.

    • I think that Kvothe stripped himself of his own power by changing his true name. Remember when Elodin freaks out when Kvothe mentions he has a friend who "keeps changing her name." So clearly it is possible for a Namer to change their true name, and clearly it is very dangerous. So "Kote" is not just something Kvothe is calling himself. He literally changed his true name. This has the effect of stripping him of much of his power. Because Kote is not a master sympathist, nor a great fighter. Occasionally Kvothe emerges, like an echo of his previous identity, that has been written over by Kote.

I think he has done this to himself, out of penance and despair. Remember, the silence is that of a man waiting to die. I think he broke his vow to Denna, and this caused disaster, probably leading to her death. Hating himself, he uses Naming to change his name to something that literally means disaster, reflecting his perceived failures. The process of doing this probably involves that chest in some way. I think that something inside would allow him to undo what he's done, but now, without his powers, he cannot open it.
